How to understand any document in minutes (not hours)

Hi Reader,

Most documents don’t need more time.
They need a better way to read them.

A 40-page report.
A contract.
A proposal you need to evaluate.

The default approach is to start from the top and read everything.
That’s slow.
And often unnecessary.
Because most of the value in a document is concentrated in a few key parts:

  • what it means
  • what matters
  • what requires action

A better approach

Instead of reading everything, use AI to extract exactly what you need.
Start with this:

1. Set your objective
Before pasting the document, define what you need:

“I need to understand the key terms, risks, and decisions I need to make.”

2. Get a quick orientation
Ask:

“What type of document is this, what is its purpose, and how is it structured?”

Now you have a map.

3. Extract what matters
Be specific:

“Identify the key points, deadlines, costs, and obligations I should focus on.”

4. Ask for what’s missing or unclear
This is where clarity improves:

“Highlight anything unusual, unclear, or that might require attention.”

5. Prepare before acting
Instead of guessing, ask:

“What should I verify or ask before making a decision?”

You’re no longer reading line by line.
You’re extracting value.

Try this today
Take any document and run:

“I need to understand this quickly.

Give me a clear summary, the key points that matter, anything unusual, and what I should verify before acting.”

You’ll go from pages to clarity in minutes.

This approach comes from the upcoming book Mastering AI for Productivity, where we focus on practical systems to save time and improve decision-making with AI.

More on that soon.

Hi Reader, Most people use AI to generate things. Write an email. Summarize a document. Create a post. Make an image. And those are useful. But one of the most valuable uses of AI is something much simpler: Using it to think more clearly. A lot of everyday stress comes from mental overload. Too many options. Too many ideas. Too many things competing for attention at the same time. Most people try to solve this by thinking harder. AI can help in a different way. Instead of asking AI to do the...

Hi Reader, If AI feels inconsistent, you’re not imagining it. Sometimes it gives you something great. Other times, it’s vague, generic, or just not useful. The problem isn’t the tool. It’s how you’re using it. Most people treat AI like a search box: “Summarize this” “Help me write this” “Explain this” And sometimes that works. But most of the time, it doesn’t. AI works best when it understands three things: 1. Context What this is about 2. Goal What you want as an outcome 3. Output How you...

Hi Reader, Most writing problems aren’t about writing. You already know what you want to say. You’ve done the thinking. You have the ideas. But writing still takes longer than it should. You start, stop, rewrite, adjust — and the result rarely feels as clear as it did in your head. The problem isn’t your ability. It’s the lack of a system. A better way to approach writingInstead of figuring things out while writing, separate the thinking from the writing. Start with this: 1. Define the...
