Writing takes too long for one reason (fix this)

Hi Reader,

Most writing problems aren’t about writing.

You already know what you want to say.
You’ve done the thinking.
You have the ideas.

But writing still takes longer than it should.

You start, stop, rewrite, adjust — and the result rarely feels as clear as it did in your head.

The problem isn’t your ability.
It’s the lack of a system.

A better way to approach writing
Instead of figuring things out while writing, separate the thinking from the writing.

Start with this:

1. Define the angle
Before writing anything, clarify what the piece is actually about:

“I need to write [type of piece] for [audience].
The goal is [what they should understand or do].
Help me sharpen the angle and identify what matters most.”

This removes most of the hesitation.

2. Build a simple structure
Then ask:

“Based on this angle, suggest a simple structure — what comes first, what follows, and how it should end.”

Now you’re not guessing anymore.

3. Write with direction

At this point, writing becomes execution.
You’re not trying to figure things out mid-way.
You’re filling in a structure that already makes sense.

Try this today

Before your next piece of writing, run this:

“I need to write [piece] for [audience].
The goal is [outcome].
Help me clarify the angle and give me a simple structure.”

You’ll spend less time rewriting — and more time producing something clear from the start.

This approach comes from the upcoming book Mastering AI for Productivity, where we break down practical systems for writing faster and more clearly without starting from scratch.

Hi Reader, Most people use AI to generate things. Write an email. Summarize a document. Create a post. Make an image. And those are useful. But one of the most valuable uses of AI is something much simpler: Using it to think more clearly. A lot of everyday stress comes from mental overload. Too many options. Too many ideas. Too many things competing for attention at the same time. Most people try to solve this by thinking harder. AI can help in a different way. Instead of asking AI to do the...

Hi Reader, If AI feels inconsistent, you’re not imagining it. Sometimes it gives you something great. Other times, it’s vague, generic, or just not useful. The problem isn’t the tool. It’s how you’re using it. Most people treat AI like a search box: “Summarize this” “Help me write this” “Explain this” And sometimes that works. But most of the time, it doesn’t. AI works best when it understands three things: 1. Context What this is about 2. Goal What you want as an outcome 3. Output How you...

Hi Reader, Most documents don’t need more time. They need a better way to read them. A 40-page report.A contract.A proposal you need to evaluate. The default approach is to start from the top and read everything. That’s slow. And often unnecessary.Because most of the value in a document is concentrated in a few key parts: what it means what matters what requires action A better approach Instead of reading everything, use AI to extract exactly what you need.Start with this: 1. Set your...
